What is Paso Doble?
Paso doble (which translates to “double step”) has a bit of an unclear history. However, it is undisputed that its classical form was originally intended for Spanish bullfights, performed when the matador was declared victorious in the arena.
The villagers then practiced it as a social dance, and soon after, Americans first witnessed paso doble when flamenco dancers performed it to depict the role of a bullfighter. By the 1930s, the ballroom version of paso doble was highly popular. In the dance, the gentleman will act as the bullfighter, and the lady will be his cape. At some points, aggressive movements will also depict a bull’s actions during the dance.
Although paso doble is fairly easy to learn, you need to prepare to move fast as it’s characterized by sharp movements and quick steps that are done as you and your partner move across the dancefloor. Overall, the dance will require about 120 steps per minute.
Learn the Steps & Posture in Paso Doble
At Baltimore Dance Studio, we have Parkville paso doble dance classes dedicated to beginners where you can learn the fundamentals of the dance. But like most of our learners, you might want to know a bit more about how to perform paso doble before going into an actual lesson. If that’s the case, we’ve discussed basic details about the steps and posture required in paso doble dancing below.
Both dance partners (leader and follower) should keep their hips forward throughout the dance, so you may want to tilt back your upper body for balance. Your spine will also be kept straight and stretched to achieve the dramatic look that’s the main part of paso doble.
The leader (usually the man) will do lots of high gestures and posturing. On the other hand, the follower (usually the woman) will perform circular steps around the leader. A lot of the steps will be led with the heel, but there will also be a lot of movements on the balls of the feet to maintain the high postures. The dancers will keep a rigid and close hold on each other while dancing.
The most basic step of paso doble only involves standing on one foot: the leader’s right foot and the follower’s left foot. Each dancer will take tiny steps in place on the ball of their feet, with a count of 1-2-1-2. Another popular step is the chasse cape, which involves having the man turn the woman in a movement that mimics having a matador’s cape.
