Bachata’s Humble Beginnings

Bachata is said to have originated in the 1960s in bars and brothels in the countryside of the Dominican Republic. The dance’s music came with heavy guitar strings and often talked about love stories that were passed down from person to person. Sadly, this has restricted the growth and prominence of Bachata throughout the country.

Further hampering its popularity was the dictator Trujillo who ruled the Dominican Republic during that time. It is said that he favored Meringue as the dance style all should admire and support. For him, Bachata was a lower art style that should not be supported, and he even banned both the dance and the music throughout his reign. Because it was only danced in brothels, Bachata’s reputation was not very good and prevented it from developing like other dance styles born in the country at that period. When Trujillo’s reign ended, Bachata still had a small following and a bad reputation.

However, when the music became mainstream thanks to Juan Luis Guerra. In 1992, Guerra was awarded a Grammy award for the song ”Bachata Rosa’, ‘which introduced music and dance to the world. Other artists like Aventura, Zacarias Ferreira, and Anthony Santos also introduced their own Bachata music, enabling the music and dance to evolve even further.

Baltimore Dance Studio can help you learn this beautiful dance and join a great community of dance lovers who share the same interest and passion for dance.

Learn the Popular Styles of Bachata with Baltimore Dance Studio!

Since its inception in the ‘60s, Bachata has evolved into many different styles, which allowed it to stay popular at the present time. Some of these styles mimic the traditional style, while others are a new take on the dance style itself.

Olney Bachata Dance Classes batcha 300x200Out of all these styles, three are well-known, and they are:

Dominican Bachata – hailed as the truest form of Bachata, this version follows the original style of Bachata, wherein there are not a lot of turn patterns, and more freestyle movements are incorporated. This version of Bachata also has extensive footwork that has a bouncy feel to it.
Bachata Moderna/ Modern Bachata – This is a new form of Bachata that uses traditional Bachata elements, but it is also influenced by various Latin dance forms such as Tango and Bolero. This version also focuses on crosses but keeps the traditional Bachata hip movement on every four counts.
Traditional style – This is the Bachata type that became famous worldwide. While the original Bachata is known for its romantic ambiance, it does not focus on the turn pattern which the traditional style is known for. Dips are also very common in the traditional style, and the hip movement on the fourth beat is hard to miss.
