Cha-Cha’s Origin and Characteristics
Cha-cha is said to have originated in the 1940s in Cuba. Known as cha-cha-cha, the dance was developed by Enrique Jorrin, a composer and violinist who was inspired by the music of mambo and rumba and created a variant of the two dances. Its name came from the sound coming from dancers’ shoes as they shuffle to the song.
The dance itself is very lively, thanks to the music used for the dance and the dance steps used. It requires a combination of small steps and a lot of hip motions or Cuban motion. Cuban motion is a unique hip movement used in most Latin-style dances, and it is usually done by alternately bending and strengthening the knees and then matching it with hip drops and raises. The small steps must be maintained as you dance along to the beat, and since this is a pair dance, you need to be synchronized with your partner as they dance in parallel to you.
At our Timonium cha-cha dance classes, especially the beginner classes, we will give you a rundown of the dance’s history and how it evolved so you get a better understanding of the dance. We will also teach you the steps one by one before helping you with the full dance and the possible choreographies you can enjoy to master it further.
Cha-Cha’s Unique Step Sequence and Rhythm
Cha-cha has one of the most upbeat dance music out of all the ballroom dances out there, allowing its dancers to be more carefree in their movements. It is also danced with authentic Cuban music, which helped propel it to popularity, but it can also be performed with country, hip-hop, and funk music.
When it comes to its dance steps, it is quite similar to rumba and mambo. What makes it different from these two Latin dances is the fact that cha-cha uses triple steps compared to the slow steps used in rumba and mambo.
Here are the other steps used in cha-cha:
- The New York
- Cha-cha chasse
- El Mojito
- Underarm spot turns
- El Paseo
- Manita a Mano
- Alemana turn
- The zigzag
- Peek-a-boo
